Ronn Maratea

Ronald M. Maratea, LCDR (Ret.), passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014. He was born in Chicago, IL on March 24, 1933.


He is survived by Janet V. Maratea, his wife of 58 years; his daughters, Karen Edmonds and husband Mike Edmonds, and Paula Maratea Fuld and husband Chris Fuld; grandchildren, Sean and Ronnie Edmonds, Natalie and John Fuld; great grandsons, Collin and Jacob Edmonds. He was pre-deceased by his son, Ronnie Michael Maratea, Jr.

After twenty years as a naval aviator, Ronn retired from the U.S. Navy and began his commercial photography business. In 1991 he closed that segment of his photographic career in order to concentrate exclusively on wildlife photography. His wildlife photos have been on display at the Virginia Aquarium, formerly Virginia Marine Science Museum, the Virginia Zoo and the Elephant Museum of South Africa's Kruger National Park. In 1993 Ronn was named the Best Wildlife Photographer in the United States by the Calendar Marketing Association.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
